What happens to organic carbon over time?

One of the harder questions in enhanced rock weathering is not only how much inorganic carbon is removed, but what happens to the organic carbon within our soils over time.

One of the harder questions in enhanced rock weathering is not only how much inorganic carbon is removed, but what happens to the organic carbon within our soils over time.

At the Carbon Drawdown Symposium on 16 June, we will present data using chemical leaching, Rock-Eval thermal analysis and Ramped Pyrolysis/Oxidation to examine whether ERW is genuinely shifting soil organic carbon toward more persistent fractions. These methods go beyond measuring total carbon content and try to look at whether the organic carbon is actually becoming more resistant to decomposition.

The answer has real implications for how ERW is verified and credited. Free to attend, virtual. Registration link: https://events.carbon-drawdown.de/p/symposium
